Our History
In 1889, sixty members of the First Baptist Church on North Highland Street, Winchester, Kentucky decided to sever ties with said church and began meeting in the U.B.F. Hall for the purpose of organizing a church.
With the Rev. R. T. Huffman as their pastor, a plot of land was purchased on West Broadway (the present site). The church was organized and given the name: Broadway Missionary Baptist Church.
On December 13, 1889, the church was granted a charter and they decided to build a House of Worship. Rev. Huffman went to Nashville, Tennessee to have a black architect draw up the blueprints. Construction was started and the cornerstone laid in 1890.
The church faced severe financial problems and some of its stiffest tests during this era. On three occasions, members went to church, and found the doors padlocked because of a delinquent debt. Four members placed their homes up as collateral to pay the debt of the Church. Because of their faith and unwavering commitment to their church we now have a House of Worship today.
In 1967, the church basement was renovated with a dining room and lounge added. Current accomplishments include a new roof, new air conditioning system, church buses, ongoing renovations to the parsonage, the sell of property, scholarships for students, and the purchase of property for Sunday School classes.
We are thankful to God that our membership continues to grow and that all bills are paid. To God Be The Glory!
